2 channel proportional

Started clearing out the loft ready for move and came across a couple of old Tamiya RC cars. Charged them up and the kids played quite happily for a bit but they both seem to struggle for range.
Any thoughts on converting these to 2.4? The Flysky module seems a bit over the top for a 2 channel car!

Frsky & Corona both need a minimum of 4 channels Doug, I suspect others might too although I've
not checked (Orange, Flysky etc) so you would probably need a new encoder, not that thats a problem
just not quite as straightforward as you might think.
You can buy a complete ready-to-go 2.4g tx/rx combo for 10-20 quid from HK or BG
